HOLIDAY TASK- An analysis of the teen movie: Pitch Perfect

glittertextmaker.info

Becca (the main character) joins six very DIFFERENT girls and  uses the power of their voices to form The (awesome) Bellas; an all girl-singing group. They are to take on the male rivals within in their own college campus known as The Troublemakers. A movie filled with laughter, great hits, the usual love story but close to a UNIQUE teen movie.

CONVENTIONS
There's no surprise that it's targeted to the teenage audience (hello PG-13(?)) and of course it has all the correct ingredients to make a teen movie look appealing. For example: Jesse getting his girl (surprised that the song wasn't used in the movie O.O), the all-singing hipster group that always gets high (so the drug use), Becca rebelling her father's wishes about the music, conflict with the rivalry gang (The Troublemakers), Cynthia being the only lesbian in the group... Well sort of (sexuality) and Becca getting arrested (the annoying authorities). Yeah the list is pretty much endless.

The genre of the movie is comedy, romance and music. I think boys would be able to enjoy the movie as much as girls but I feel as if it's more targeted at the female audience, only because it's got that girl power vibe going on.
COMEDY:
Even though the movie doesn't take place in the traditional high school setting, it still features all the right stuff that will have you laughing throughout the movie. I guess you could say since it takes place in college, the embarrassing stuff is not as extreme as the things you would see in such movies like American Pie; you could say they are taking a mature approach (that and the fact that it's a PG-13 movie).
(It's basically a movie you can watch with your parents)

Oh the embarrassment... *sigh*

A- Pitch -Perfect- Puke- Angel =D

MUSIC:
As I mentioned before, the movie features great songs from classics such as the movie "The Breakfast Club" to the modern age techno stuff like... David Guetta and Sia with Titanium. It's got all songs that both the older and younger generations can enjoy, listening to their all time favourite songs but with a little twist.

ROMANCE:
The genre that makes us think we can actually relate to the character. You know where you see the girl/guy you like, you instantly have a bond with them and then BAM! After watching some movies together and a big showdown you get that relationship. Only difference is it will probably take us a few months at least until we get to that stage, instead of 112 mins... Anyway the love could be see as soon as Jesse caught Becca's eyes, singing his heart the girl he didn't  even know... At a back of a cab. Cute.

REPRESENTATION:
As any teen movie, there are the typical characters that we can all recognise. You know the jock, the pretty face blah blah blah... But with this movie the stereotypes are... Different. They're the same but different... Ugh if you've seen the movie you probably know what I mean. Here are three examples:

First up we have.... BECCA!
THE REBEL:
Becca: The cool kid, is way into her music than she is with her books. She literally has no friends (not even her roommate wanted to hold a conversation with her) until she joined the group. She tends to be seen wearing rather dark jeans, a few checked shirts, tank tops with the same dull boring colours. A girl that's not into getting attention. The perfect girl to play our rebel character as she's the one many would disapprove

Onto the next one we have... CYNTHIA ROSE!

THE BUTCH BASS:

Cynthia: Holding the typical view that lesbians seem to hold the tomboyish look and can't keep their hands off when it comes to other women... Literally. She is seen in quite boyish clothing with the simple shirts and those long shorts... Not that bothered with make up but rocks out the wild hair. Though throughout the movie, Cynthia doesn't let her sexuality overshadow her powerful vocal cords and stands out from the crowd when needed to.

Lastly we have.... FAT AMY!
Fat Amy: I would be lying if I said this wasn't my favourite character. Fat Amy fits in the stereotype of the stupid fat friend, beautifully. I think what makes her so funny is that she's being serious majority of the time... Anyway, she's has the bright blonde hair (some would argue that's where she gets her ditsy attitude from) always rocking in some sort of pink wear. Loves her leather jacket and her skirts. Is not that keen into getting fit, does enjoy her food (as do I) Oh, and she's stupidly funny!

STORYLINE:
Well the storyline isn't that hard to follow. I mean you have the all-awesome-girl group, The Bellas, trying to win a singing competition, where they can only make music with their mouths  (cool ^^). Of course with them having so much screening time makes them seen to be the good guys whereas the components, The Troublemakers as the bad guys (even though our love interest  features in the group); bringing out our binary opposites. They also did this through the mise- en -scene as the Troublemakers hang out in a hot tub (only a jerk would hang out in a hot tub with his friends -_-). Through sound, they pretty much make it clear who was the bad guy through speech and so on. Making sweet sounds with their months the two groups battle it out to truly show who's the best.

Vs

(Obviously there's more that two of them... They're just not here.)

MY REVIEW:
Well if you haven't seen this movie and my blog hasn't convinced you then you're crazy! This movie is definitely worth watching, I promise you. It's a movie that allows you to relate to the present or past, good times and bad times. And to add onto that... It features an AWESOME soundtrack!
5 stars! *****
